The Original City Association is: an organization that advocates for “quality of life” improvements for the
- 14 Downtown Historic Districts
- An informational resource on issues affecting downtown
- An influential partner with City Hall and the University of Alabama regarding issues relevant to our neighborhoods
- A great way to meet your neighbors & be involved in your community
- Over the past few years the Original City Association (OCA) has made steady progress for our area.
We continue to work on many issues that affect the Historic Districts including: ordinance enforcement; monitoring HPC, ZBA and Planning Commission hearings; and consulting with developers on new building proposals. For the past 2 years OCA has worked with UA Off-Campus Housing to raise student awareness of local ordinances. We are thankful for the assistance we receive from Mayor Maddox and city officials. They are working with us to improve reporting & tracking of occupancy, parking, & upkeep violations. This year the OCA has redesigned our website and has a new Facebook page. We are continuing to update the website and our by-laws in order to make information readily available to all.
There are many things to do and it takes all of us to make it work. We are thankful for the many members who have helped protect our area by attending hearings and voicing concern over inappropriate developments and who keep watch over their areas and report violations. We must maintain a large membership to keep our voice strong in representing our area. By joining OCA you enable us to continue our work in protecting the Historic Downtown neighborhoods.
We are not all business… we have fun too! Twice a year we host a picnic where fun & food abound &you can catch up with your old neighbors & meet new ones. The OCA Holiday Walk-About is highlighted by luminaries throughout the neighborhoods & an outdoor party featuring a visit from Santa, horse-drawn carriage rides, great food & spirited fun!
